Enjoy moments together
Cats have accompanied people for millennia, originally protecting households against rodents, and over time taking on the role of a companion and best friend. It is worth looking after our house pets, taking care of their health, providing appropriate food and organizing fun activities.
Cat sterilization : when is it worth to decide on it?
Sterilization is a topic that troubles every owner of a 6-12-month old cat, the age when this procedure is most often performed. Sterilization involves depriving the animal of fertility, e.g., by ligation of the fallopian tubes or vas deferens, while the castration of a cat involves removing the testicles or ovaries.
Sterilization involves depriving the animal of fertility, e.g., by ligation of the fallopian tubes or vas deferens, while the castration of a cat involves removing the testicles or ovaries. Many cat owners decide on one of these procedures, primarily bearing in mind the wellbeing of the pet. Currently, as many as 58% of cats in Poland are subject to the procedure. It has been proven that cat’s life expectancy after this procedure can be even twice as long, and that castration can have a positive effect on cat’s health: it protects against genital and lung cancer and also lets owners avoids unpleasant symptoms such as aggression and apathy. Moreover, we ought to bear in mind ethical considerations: there are now many homeless cats in animal shelters, who have little chance of finding a loving home, so preventing the birth of new kittens helps to avoid higher numbers of unwanted pets. After castration, especially in males, also personality changes become apparent: such a cat becomes calmer and more eager to spend time at home. Additionally, the procedure has a positive effect on the quality of cat’s life and increases the comfort of the owners, but it is worth remembering about animal’s changing needs after surgery. Hormonal changes may lead to increased weight of the animal, therefore special cat food is recommended for sterilized cats, the composition of which has been developed just for the animals after aforementioned procedure. Properly balanced cat food will help to ensure good health of both castrated and spayed pets.
How to spend time with your cat on a warm day?
Warmer months are the time when the behaviour of most cats changes. During times of high temperatures cats may be less active, while during spring days, they tend to spend more time at the window or balcony, watching the outside world, e.g. birds, other animals, as well as having fun with children and pedestrians. Although at high temperatures many cats prefer to nap rather than to play, it is worth finding time for joyful moments together, organizing fun suitable for summer months. If a cat is not interested in activities requiring a lot of energy such as mice chase or mechanical toys, you can give it ice cubes, which will not only entertain the cat (it’s not easy to catch an ice cube!), but will also help cool your pet’s paws. Even cats that spend time outdoors tend to spend less time during the summer, so it is important take care of appropriate stimuli and fun at home. Another great fun option for warmer days is the so called Snack Ball, a plastic ball filled with cat food delicacies. The task is to reach the snack placed inside the ball, which does not require too much physical effort, but at the same time helps to “animate” even a cat that’s a bit lazy. Another equally interesting solution is a toy mat, reminiscent of that for small children. The toy resembles a soft fleece blanket with hanging toys, most often feathers or mice that the cat may try to grab while lying on the mat. In the summer, toys that require little effort are most effective, such as scratching posts and tunnels, where cats can not only play, but also take a nap. However, definitely avoid forcing the cat to play with things it does not want to play and you should allow your pet to rest away from the heat.
During high temperatures, some cats have reduced appetite, so you need to take care of a balanced diet using special nutrition. Due to increased thirst, the water bowl should always be full, sometimes it may require several replenishments during one day. It is worth making this effort, because nothing is as pleasant as the satisfaction of our pet.
