Enjoy moments together
Greyhounds were already known in ancient times – their images can be seen on Mesopotamian ceramics, dating back to as early as the 6th century BC. They were represented chasing desert gazelles, and this image was reinforced as time passed. They used to be employed in hunting, mainly wolves and hares, as hounds capable of running at over 60 km/h, following their eyesight rather than the sense of smell. Today, they would rather take part in racing than hunting, and they are kept for their appearance.
Slender and independent
No surprise here: greyhounds are lean and tall, with characteristic elongated, agile torso, subtle head, and long, muscular legs. Long, half-standing ears add even more charm to the elongated muzzle. They can have short and delicate coat, but there are also wire-haired and long-haired variants. The wide breast is important, accommodating high volume lungs, due to which – in addition to the aerodynamic figure – greyhounds are capable of achieving such extraordinary running speeds.
In order to take full advantage of the abilities of these brave, self-confident, resistant and agile dogs, you should give them proper care and stimulate them properly to support their unique character. Therefore, a greyhound is a great companion for a person with an active lifestyle, who spend a lot of time outdoors and does not avoid physical effort. However, any greyhound owner will have to accept this dog’s aristocratic, haughty personality and independence – any force, screaming or aggressive training methods will not work at all.
Summer with a greyhound
Your joy of spending time together will be full when you take a good care of your greyhound. Give your companion an opportunity to move and be active, offer appropriate stimulating experience if you want your dog to stay in good health and general well-being. Every day, in addition to walking your dog for a quarter of an hour or so, you should take him or her at least for one longer walk. A good thing would be to give your greyhound an opportunity to gallop several times a week, e.g. on a meadow, in a forest, etc., and to develop his hunting skills by throwing him a ball or a favourite toy. Particularly during warmer months of the year, your should support your dog by taking him or her to the countryside; nevertheless, playing with the dog should be a continuous activity, also at home where you should support their reflex and agility.
Well chosen dog feed is equally important. It would be reasonable here to try the Nutrilove line for active dogs. Special hound feed covers the increased energy requirement and the need for body-building elements. It will ensure adequate strength and temperament to your greyhound.
