Creative dog walking

Playing with your dog is a truly important part of their care. It is a pleasant way to build trust between a dog and its owner, it helps to regulate energy levels and it aids in developing a dog’s intelligence. There are countless exciting activities you can introduce when taking your dog for a walk. Here we list some of them.

Activate their sense of smell

Smell is the most important sense for dogs, that’s why it is beneficial for them to participate in activities which let them use it to the full extent. They stimulate the brain and help to teach your dog to focus on a given task. Try hiding some snacks in the grass or in an old log – see if your dog can make use of its nose!

Chasing a toy – an upgrade

Your dog’s hunting skills make it natural for them to enjoy chasing. You can use it when playing with your dog by throwing its favourite toy. However, you can do much more than just throw it around for 30 minutes. Add some commands and if your dog obeys, you can throw their favourite toy as a reward. This kind of activity will help you to strengthen the bond between and your dog.

Learning is fun!

Dogs like to learn new stuff. Take a pack of snacks when going for a walk with your dog and try to teach it a new command like “ask” or “turn around.” Learning to do some tricks makes dogs more aware of their bodies and helps in stretching and exercising their muscles.

King of the local infrastructure

Climbing things is one of the activities which are fun and help a dog to become more confident and fit. Local infrastructure may provide useful for this – try some nearby benches or logs. However, all of this has to be done with care for your dog’s safety. You shouldn’t let your dog climb on slippery surfaces or climb too high – it may result in injuries.

The spirit of sportsman

If an owner and their dog love physical activity, want to learn new stuff together, and are interested in dog sports, they could try: agility, frisbee, dog trekking, obedience, canicross or bikejoring. However, remember to make some scans before these intense physical activities to make sure your dog’s joints work fine. You may also consult a professional trainer who can help you in choosing the best sport for your dog, set the routine and pace of training, and make sure of your dog’s fitness.

It’s good to be creative when taking your dog for a walk. Think about the activities which can make it interesting and let your dog do what they like. However, always remember to keep them safe and treat their health as a priority!
