Enjoy moments together
How to take care of your cat when autumn comes along? Weather fluctuations, particularly those in autumn, involve a change in cats’ behaviours. Cats have uniquely receptive senses, which they can use to predict the weather. They will scratch your door before a thunderstorm, or stare intently into a single point out of a window before it starts raining, or they might begin to clean their ears thoroughly. When outdoor temperature starts to drop, cats tend to choose warmer places to sleep. Indeed, they can take a great care of themselves, yet people should help them during the colder months of the year.
If your cat does not usually leave the home, he or she will not be affected by autumn weather fluctuations so much. Still, you should put the cat’s bed a little higher above the floor if the cat used to sleep on the floor before – you will eliminate the negative consequences of draughts. An older animal (or one suffering from arthritis) can find it harder to jump on colder days. You should consider making it easier for the cat by creating special platforms.
A cat that regularly goes outdoors should not stop doing this in autumn. A cat’s body is capable of adaptation to variable temperature, producing thicker hair. In addition, your animal friend will become tougher, with a stronger immune system. But if you have built a cat house outdoors, you should consider moving it higher above the ground, to avoid ground frost.
A cat is an independent animal, with a great sense of balance, agile and lively, usually falling down on all fours, with perfect eyesight and sense of smell, and an efficient hunter. With all these qualities, cats are able to entertain themselves. But of course, owners are not excluded from playing (particularly in autumn when cats are less likely to spend a lot of time outdoors). Cats love playing with all kinds of ropes, bands or wool, but this kind of activity should be monitored. The consequences of swallowing a toy can be really unpleasant.
In addition, you should give your cat some more accessories, such as scratching posts, balls, tunnels, or toys mounted on a stick. They will ensure motor training for the animal, catering to the cat’s natural instincts and at the same time strengthening the cat’s bond with the owner.
You should remember that cats need regular vaccination and parasite control; therefore, you will not avoid visiting a vet in autumn. When this happens, make sure your animal companion is transported properly. Preferably, your cat should get a proper padded transporter to protect them from cold.
Proper care and nutrition are the next things you need to provide for. A domestic cat, exposed to artificial light and living in steady temperatures, moults 12 months a year. It is therefore important to take good care of the hair and to brush the cat regularly (cats swallow their hair during their cleaning routines). Make sure you trim the cat’s claws regularly and keep the mouth, nose and ears clean.
Choose such type of cat food as will be most appropriate for your friend’s lifestyle and the season – the cat needs more energy in colder months to warm up.
