Enjoy moments together

Cat rituals: 4 ideas for playing together

Cats are believed to have their own ways. You should remember about that, and understand that it’s the cat who decides when and how they want to spend time with their owners, and as the cat chooses his favourite activities, he also creates daily rituals. Every moment, particularly the long autumn evenings, is the right time to play with your feline friends, so that you can both enjoy your moments together.

As Daniel Defoe said, ’Who has a cat that can not be afraid of loneliness.’ There’s a lot of truth in these words, as cats really enjoy spending time with their owners, they love being cuddled, and getting warmed up and lazy on their owners’ laps is among their favourite leisure activities.

The autumn and winter season, with early sunsets and people staying at home for longer hours, is a great opportunity to spend more time with your cat and to initiate your shared rituals, based on the cat’s favourite activities.

Cats are creative and intelligent, so you won’t need any special accessories to have fun together; what you need is the right attitude and some objects everyone has at home. Every cat is a free spirit, who will decide by himself which kind of activity he will enjoy most doing together, but you can still have some interesting suggestions for your feline friend.

Catch

Playing catch must be the most popular activity, which most felines really enjoy. For a start, you need a fishing rod or just any stick, to which you attach a mouse, a feather or another small toy at the end. If you don’t have a ready-made toy, which you can buy at any pet store, you can do perfectly well with an ordinary piece of rope with a ball of crumpled paper, tin foil, or even a bottle cap. Every cat has a hunter instinct, and playing catch will soon become his favourite ritual for an evening together with the owner. Your feline will certainly appreciate you making sure that the toy is fluffy and makes rustling sounds in his paws.

RC car or clockwork mouse

RC car is an activity that resembles playing catch but is certainly more energetic. Use small remotely controlled toy car, preferably mouse-sized, which your cat will be trying to hunt down. This kind of activity is particularly enjoyable for young cats, full of energy and intent to engage in chasing the car down. While playing with the cat, try to drive the car in a way a real mouse would: go under the chair or behind the sofa, hide from the cat’s view. If you don’t have any RC car at hand, you can use a clockwork mouse instead.

Laser pointer

Elizabeth Marshall Thomas once said that ‘Cats live in our homes without losing any of their wild nature.’ One of the ways cats show their unconquerable nature is certainly their tireless readiness to have fun and to chase, which you can engage through playing with a laser pointer. Felines love chasing a small red light, so a laser pointer will be a lot of fun for them as well as for their owners watching their struggle. The only disadvantage can be that a cat is never able to catch the light with his paws, so there are some cats who prefer more ‘concrete’ toys. It’s essential to choose the kind of laser which will be completely safe for the eyes of your purring friend.

The box

Cats love hiding and pushing into corners which seem to be completely unaccessible at first sight. An empty carton box is just enough to encourage your cat to search, to explore unknown territories and to discover fun things. No cat, with its curious nature, will ignore an opportunity to take a peek into an empty box or paper bag, just to check for an interesting finding. It’s worth remembering – try not to throw out unnecessary boxes immediately.

Collette, a French author, claimed that ‘There is no such thing as an ordinary cat’, which is most certainly true – you can easily say that every cat is unique and extraordinary. Every cat has his favourite habits and activities. So if you can only discover your feline friend’s favourite ways of spending time together, these activities will soon develop into your own rituals, and you’re heading for the unforgettable experience of enjoying moments together.
